HOPE NC contracted with UNC TEACCH to complete a housing needs assessment for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities in the Triangle. The research was completed in October 2023 and the findings mirror the same needs and preferences we are seeing from national research.

Approximately 6.5 million people in the United States have an intellectual and/or developmental disability (I/DD)

Did you know…

  • 28.1% of people with disabilities live in poverty compared with 13.3 % of individuals without disabilities.

  • 17.5% of individuals with disabilities were employed full or part-time compared with 65% of individuals without disabilities.

  • The average income for most individuals with disabilities, many for whom rely on federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI), is only $9,156 per year, making it almost impossible to afford an adequate place to live in any rental housing market in the nation.

11.2 million older adults were cost burdened in 2021, an all time high, with > 30 of their income spent on housing.
